Hosting Type*

Hosting (VPS server provided by us)

Use a Hetzner Cloud VPS server managed by us.

No setup required on your part. root access available to you.

Guarantees an easier setup and only one provider to deal with (us).

On-Premises (Your Own Server)

Use any amd64 server with a Debian-based distribution (we recommend the latest Ubuntu LTS) that you've obtained separately.

You'll need to set up SSH access for us.

Allows more independence and hosting provider (region) flexibility.

Server Sizing Guide

Choosing the right server size is:

less dependant on the number of locally-hosted users
heavily influenced by rooms complexity - joining large rooms like Matrix HQ with lots of foreign servers requires lots of resources (even Medium-sized server will struggle)
dependant on the number of extra services hosted on the same server - below, we offer a variety of add-on services (bridges, bots, etc.)

Because of this, we recommend:

a minimum of 2GB of RAM and 40GB SSD for small-scale deployments which don't have any extra services or join large rooms (1000+ members)
at least 4GB of RAM and larger disk for a deployment with additional components and intended for large rooms

Keep in mind: minimal requirements are for the server to start and run, but it may not be enough for a smooth experience.

GPU-heavy

Matrix Bridges

With the help of bridges, you can access different networks right from your own Matrix server.

Bridge reliability cannot be guaranteed. Most external network operators do not like their service being used from 3rd party apps and attempt blocking.

Using a bridge with some networks violates their Terms of Service and may get your account blocked.

Bridges (if enabled) are charged as a pack with a fixed price of $5. + $5
