Facebook Messenger bridge

The Facebook Messenger bridge installed by us is powered by mautrix-facebook.

This bridge is unmaintained and is no longer installed by us since February 2024.

New installations are powered by the newer and more reliable mautrix-meta-messenger bridge.

Usage

Start a chat with @facebookbot:your-server.com. When it joins, type help in the chat to see instructions

1. Send login your@email.here to the bridge bot
2. Send your password in the next message
3. If you have 2FA enabled, the bot will ask you to send the 2FA token.
4. Recent chats should now get portals automatically. Other chats will get portals as you receive messages.

Note that in some cases, Facebook might decide your account has suspicious activity and block you until you do some tasks like adding a phone number or resetting your password. In most cases, enabling two-factor authentication solves this.

Migrating to the new mautrix-meta bridge

To migrate from this old and deprecated mautrix-facebook bridge to the mautrix-meta-messenger bridge:

1. Contact our support staff and ask for your server to be switched to the new Messenger bridge

2. We’ll adjust your server’s configuration (on our side) to use the new bridge

3. Find your existing chat room with the Facebook Messenger bridge bot (@facebookbot:your-server.com)

4. Send a clean-rooms message to the bot to get cleanup instructions. You should send at least a few commands after this, like:

   • clean-recommended (this makes the bot leave all old/unused portal rooms)
   • clean-groups A (this makes the bot leave all active portal rooms)
   • clean-groups M (this makes the bot leave all management rooms, including the one you’re sending the message to)

5. Despite this cleanup, all your old portal rooms and their existing messages will remain for historical purposes. If you’d like them removed from your client, leave the rooms manually.

6. Apply the new server configuration by sending a run maintenance command to our scheduler bot and wait for completion. This will remove the old mautrix-facebook bridge and install the new mautrix-meta-messenger bridge.
