## Usage

This page shows you how to set up the Signal bridge using Cinny client app (available as an add-on component), so that you can receive and send messages between Signal and Matrix rooms.

### Invite the bot to a management room

First, please start a chat with `@signalbot:your-server.com` to create a management room.

**Make sure to replace `your-server.com` with your actual “base domain”.** Setting `your-server.com` or `example.com` does not work on your server!

![Invitation dialog to create a management room](https://etke.cc/help/bridges/mautrix-signal/images/1.webp)

When the bot joins to the created room, it sends confirmation messages to the room as below. If they are visible, bot successfully joined the management room. It works as expected.

### Authentication

To bridge Signal into Matrix, you need to authenticate the bridge’s bot for Signal.

To conduct authentication, please follow the steps below.

1. Go to `Linked Devices` in Signal app and add a new device
2. Send `login` to the bridge bot
3. Scan the QR code the bridge bot sends you

The QR code will be displayed on the room as below:

![QR code for logging in](https://etke.cc/help/bridges/mautrix-signal/images/3.webp)

After logging in, the bridge will bridge chats as you receive messages.

**Note**: Signal does not support any kind of message history (even on official apps), so the bridge won’t backfill any messages.

### Useful commands

If you send a message `help` to the room, available commands are listed in a message like below:

Here is a couple of useful commands:

- `search <query>`: Search for users on the remote network
- `start-chat [login ID] <identifier>`: Start a direct chat with the given user
