Reminder: Synapse Admin Path Changed

Starting from the previous update, the Synapse Admin path changed from https://matrix.your-server.com/synapse-admin to https://matrix.your-server.com/admin

Component Updates: Authenticated Media Enabled by Default

With this update, your Synapse homeserver will now require authentication for newly uploaded media files. While most Matrix ecosystem components (clients, bots, etc.) should support this feature, some software may lack compatibility.

Due to the critical security benefits of this change, we strongly discourage disabling it. If you develop your own Matrix app, service, or tool, please consider implementing authenticated media support as soon as possible.

Component Updates: KeyDB Replaced by Valkey

Previously, we replaced Redis with KeyDB due to Redis’s licensing change.

Unfortunately, KeyDB has proven to be problematic, with issues that are not easily worked around. As a result, we are switching to Valkey, a promising drop-in replacement that has demonstrated reliability and performance.

This change only affects servers using Redis-dependent components such as Synapse Workers, Funkwhale, and Peertube. Please expect a one-time maintenance downtime of up to 15 minutes during the migration.

Service Updates: Enhancing News Awareness

Some customers have missed important updates shared in #news:etke.cc, resulting in misunderstandings about server changes and increased customer support requests. To address this, the Scheduler will now repost announcements from #news:etke.cc directly to the DMs of homeserver admins.

We encourage everyone to take just one minute per week to read these updates and stay informed. This small effort will help prevent confusion and ensure smoother operations.

Service Updates: Monitoring Changes

This week, we made significant backend changes to the monitoring service. If you notice unexpected behavior or incorrect results in reports, please contact us.

Additionally, all customers will have the Systemd unit monitoring feature enabled in the upcoming week.

Service Updates: Deprecating Sliding-Sync Proxy

Finally, the Sliding Sync MSC got a Synapse-native implementation in the form of Simplified Sliding Sync MSC, and client apps are updated to use it; thus we’re starting a multistep process of removal of the old Sliding Sync implementation (powered by the Sliding Sync Proxy).

With this update, Sliding Sync Proxy’s URL has been removed from /.well-known/matrix/client, causing new sessions to use Synapse’s native Sliding Sync endpoints instead.

In the future, the Sliding Sync Proxy component will be disabled and removed from all servers.

NOTE: Please keep in mind that Sliding Sync is not part of the Matrix protocol yet, nor its implementations are stable. If you use Sliding Sync with your client apps, you may and will face bugs and issues, that’s expected. If you don’t want to have such issues - do not use Sliding Sync in your client apps (some apps, like Element X, work only with Sliding Sync)

Service Update: Synapse Admin changes

With this update, Synapse Admin UI has been changed, here are some highlights. Apart from small QoL changes like user profile added to the top menu, separate login button for access token auth, and fixed room state display, there are more significant changes:

And the fork got its own community support room: #synapse-admin:etke.cc
