# ServicesHere’s everything we offer, from the managed Matrix server itself to the extras that ride along with it. ## Managed Servers We run managed Matrix homeservers two ways: [on-premises](#on-premises) on your own infrastructure, or [cloud hosting](#cloud-hosting) on a server we rent for you. Either way, the server is our problem to keep running, not yours. ### Hosting Types #### Cloud Hosting **Get a server without having to deal with infrastructure** The Hosting plan is for those who would rather avoid dealing with a server infrastructure by yourself. For this type of offering, we will rent a server from [Hetzner Cloud](https://hetzner.cloud/?ref=1yg3ZZmtrg5A) ([sustainable hosting](https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/nachhaltigkeit/) 🌳) for you and manage it on your behalf. You can learn more about this service [here](https://etke.cc/services/hosting/). #### On-Premises **Managed Matrix homeserver on your own infrastructure** Cloud hosting not your thing? No problem. We can install and manage your Matrix homeserver on-premises, on your own infrastructure or on whichever cloud provider you prefer. Here are prerequisites which need to be set up on your side: - An x86/amd64 Linux server with a Debian-based distribution (the latest Ubuntu LTS is recommended). - An unrestricted internet access for the server. Please note that due to technical complexity and nuances running a Matrix server behind NAT, proxied or air-gapped setups is not supported by us. - A domain name to use with your Matrix server. Alternatively, you can obtain a subdomain from us at no extra cost. * * * ### Subscription All our services are available on a subscription basis. The Matrix base service is the only thing we require you to pay for on the [order form](https://etke.cc/order/). Everything else is an optional add-on, so you only pay for what you actually want. #### Getting Started First of all, [place an order](https://etke.cc/order/) for the services you’re interested in. After that, you will receive an email with details about the next steps to get your server up and running. During this process, you will need to make payment for the order. You can follow the instructions in the email to complete it. After the payment is made, the team will set up your managed Matrix server and take care of the following: - Setting up Docker - Configuring Matrix homeserver components (e.g., Synapse, Coturn, [Ketesa](https://etke.cc/help/extras/ketesa), Element app, etc.) based on your order - Handling database backups (gzip SQL dump for on-premises installations or server snapshots for hosted options) - Configuring swap based on your server’s RAM capacity - Configuring fail2ban for intrusion prevention - Setting up the firewall (ufw) - Conducting SSH security hardening As a part of this process, we also ensure: - System package updates - Cleanup of unused system and Docker resources - Logs retention for 7 days #### Maintenance After the initial configuration, maintenance services will become available. They are offered exclusively for the homeservers installed by us, owing to variations in configuration and deployment methods. **Automatic Weekly Maintenance** Our automated maintenance runs once a week, on the [recurring schedule](https://etke.cc/help/extras/ketesa/#recurring) you set in [Ketesa](https://etke.cc/help/extras/ketesa/#server-actions). If you haven’t set one, we quietly pick a sensible default so your server still gets its upkeep. etke.cc adopts the rolling release model, and each change by the team is automatically tested and released as soon as it passes testing. On every Friday a weekly recap with announcements and updates are posted to ensure nobody misses them. You can also trigger maintenance via [Ketesa](https://etke.cc/help/extras/ketesa/#server-actions) manually at any time, although it is usually unnecessary. As part of our maintenance, we perform the following tasks every week: - System package updates - Matrix component updates - Cleanup of unused system, Docker, and Matrix resources (e.g., cache, logs, thumbnails) - Logs retention for 7 days - Automatic tuning and vacuuming of your database, tailored to your server’s configuration Sit back, relax, and let us handle the weekly maintenance for you. Please note that maintenance does not cover distribution upgrades (e.g., from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04), as they are considered to be major ones and require manual intervention. You can either execute the upgrade task by yourself with our guidance (no extra cost) or request our assistance for a fee. Note that the Scheduler bot is only available for federated servers and for explicitly defined users, while Ketesa works for all servers and all homeserver administrators. Most people barely touch it: one or two requests a month is the norm, and Basic handles that without breaking a sweat. --- ## [Hosting](https://etke.cc/services/hosting/) When selecting “Hosting Type” on our [order form](https://etke.cc/order/), it provides you with two choices: - **Hosting** (VPS server set up and maintained by us) - **On-Premises** (your own server) If the **Hosting** service is selected, we’ll be hosting the server for you. This is a **fully-managed service with the least amount of hassle for you**. Our hosted servers are powered by [Hetzner Cloud](https://hetzner.cloud/?ref=1yg3ZZmtrg5A) ([sustainable hosting](https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/nachhaltigkeit/) 🌳), available in various [sizes](#server-sizes) and across multiple [regions](#regions). Alternatively, if your server has specific requirements (with regard to server sizes, regional availability, etc.), you can select an **On-Premises** server and manage it by yourself. --- ## [Monitoring](https://etke.cc/services/monitoring/) At [etke.cc](https://etke.cc), we keep an eye on your Matrix server so you do not have to. This service is included with every server subscription. ## What is monitored? Here’s exactly what we watch: ### Ports We make sure the expected ports are reachable based on the services you have enabled. For a basic Matrix server without add-ons, we monitor: - `22/tcp`: SSH port - `80/tcp`, `443/tcp`, `443/udp`: HTTP and HTTPS. UDP is required for [HTTP/3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP/3). - `8448/tcp` and `8448/udp`: Matrix federation port (if federation is enabled). UDP is required for [HTTP/3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP/3). - `3478/tcp+udp`, `5349/tcp+udp`: TURN ports (VoIP calls) - `49152-49573/udp`: TURN ports (VoIP calls) If you have additional components, for example the [Postmoogle email bridge](https://etke.cc/help/bridges/postmoogle/), we also monitor extra ports: `25/tcp` and `587/tcp` (SMTP). --- ## [Private Docker Registry](https://etke.cc/services/registry/) We deploy all components in Docker containers to ensure security, fast updates, and portability between different distributions and cloud providers. Alas, nowadays public container registries have various issues, such as: - **Rate limits**: For example, [Docker Hub](https://hub.docker.com) has a limit of 10 pulls per hour for anonymous users. - **Unavailability**: Sometimes, public registries are down, and you can’t pull the image you need. Unfortunately, this happens quite often. - **Bandwidth**: Pulling images from public registries can be slow, especially when they experience high load. - **Restricted access**: Public registries often ban some countries by IP blocks, and when the banned IPs are resold to cloud providers, you can accidentally get one of them, losing the ability to pull images from public registries. You cannot predict it beforehand, unfortunately.
